Looking forward to the 17th, to hear Apple detail v3.0 of the iPhone OS vs Windows Mobile 6.5. I need a new phone, now my bet is on Apple!

David is a ‘son of Northern Ireland’ – one of our Tech Heroes. He’s commenting on the news that on St Patrick’s Day this year, Apple will open the curtains on iPhone OS 3.0 and show us what to expect. This is similar to what they’ve done in previous years regarding the iPhone – it’s great for building expectations and giving a taste of what is to come. It also sends the other mobile OS providers into a flurry of photocopying every feature.

David is also commenting on Windows Mobile 6.5. Recently outed as an unwanted stopgap, we’re all left waiting for what will eventually be Windows Mobile 7 with this release as ‘filler not killer’. At Microsoft’s Public Sector CIO Summit in Redmond, Ballmer admitted the company was falling behind its rivals. “We have a significant release coming this year,” he said. “Not the full release we wanted to have this year but we have a significant release coming this year with Windows Mobile 6.5.”

The solution – “Wait til Windows Mobile 7” which neatly echoes their desktop/laptop/server strategy “Wait til Windows 7”.

This has been a successful strategy from Windows pre-version 1 so why change a winning formula.

  1. Yes but microsoft has other woes and other fish to fry. The company is losing revenue in the NetBook market hand over fist. Its NetBook OS offerings are not fit for purpose – people want a simple rapid boot-up experience with NetBooks and Windows machines are filled with puffery. I suspect that Mobile 7 may well be a NetBook destined OS as well as a phone OS. However this is likely to be an iffy strategy. Fact is that all a NetBook needs is a robust and stable browser – and that implies the root of Microsoft’s problem i.e. no real Cloud offerings. I really sense that MS is losing its grip.

As for Apple. Well we all moan about the failings of OS 2.0 – but it’s still bloody brilliant compared to Windows Mobile. Yes we need cut and paste. Yes there are other quirky design features. But it’s a wonderful concept and a great platform. The great breakthrough in Version 2 was support for Exchange ActiveSynch. Once MS agreed to that little licensing deal it lost the phone war.

  2. Apple would tell you that design, marketing, innovation and Vista are the top 4 reasons why they are gaining market share.

I think we agree violently on some things. It reminds of of the difference between ‘love’ and ‘like’.
I like some people BECAUSE of some things.
I love some people IN SPITE of some things.

I love the iPhone (insofar as you can have love for an object) in spite of the fact that it’s a lousy phone, has no cut and paste, can’t forward texts or contacts, has no MMS support.

I liked my previous phone (a K800i) because it had 3G and allowed me to tether my MacBook Pro. The rest of the phone was incidental.
