I’ve been asked to do a couple of guest lectures for Columbia University’s upcoming mobile programming class on various topics involving iPhone programming. Before I discuss the actual material here, let me just take a moment to point out that allowing someone like me to speak in front of young, impressionable minds is somewhat like allowing the wolf in the hen house. I seem to have lost all of my subliminal message PowerPoints, but rest assured that I will be making every effort to corrupt, taint, twist and otherwise warp the bright potential of these students into my own dark, twisted army of developers….
Are Queens’ or The University of Ulster doing anything for mobile at all?
as of final year – graduating this summer (eek!) we’ve covered only xml – which for a computer science course one might have thought standard to say the least. One module briefly flirts with the idea of mobile content – but that’s as far as it goes. I can’t speak for Years 1 and 2 as of this year for Computer Science – or for that matter Interactive Multimedia Design (which I think is more for the artist – less for the programmer).
Im on my final year computer science in magee. This year new modules were introduced one of which was Mobile Computing. It invloved developing a basic mobile application for the Windows Mobile platform.

I’m in IMD and although it’s more web and graphic design we still do Visual Basic. Considering a lot of us are on Macs and a lot own iPhones taking xCode and making iPhone apps would be a lot better, although, with Jordanstown (and thus Comp Sci) being totally Windows based they would have to invest in new hardware for it.
There’s stuff happening in February for budding iPhone developers. Watch this space!
