The problem with Microfinance and Microcredit is that, at the end of the day, someone ends up owing someone else money. And that’s a shaky way to get started in anything.

The concept of Microfinance for small businesses in return for equity in the business has already been successfully applied via Paul Graham’s Ycombinator.

Y Combinator does seed funding for startups. Seed funding is the earliest stage of venture funding. It pays your expenses while you’re getting started.
We make small investments (rarely more than $20,000) in return for small stakes in the companies we fund (usually 2-10%).
What happens at Y Combinator? The most important thing we do is work with startups on their ideas. We’re hackers ourselves, and we’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to make things people want. So we can usually see fairly quickly the direction in which a small idea should be expanded, or the point at which to begin attacking a large but vague one.

This seems to me to be a different slant on the pre-Bubble concept of ‘code for pizza’. I knew a couple of smart guys back pre-2000 who worked full time for companies in return for pizza and promises while in receipt of unemployment benefit – they were doing the right thing after all – making a real concerted effort to get off the unemployment line by trying to be employable. None of them are gazillionaires right now (which shows the benefits of contracts over promises).

While Northern Ireland has had the concept of the incubator for years (the first one I visited was the Fujitsu/University of Ulster funded incubator where I met the guys who were ‘Osarius’ who have now all moved on to bigger and better things), it was definitely in a larger scale. There were desks, offices, stationery. That’s not the sector I’m interested in.

With the work being done for the co-working space in Northern Ireland, it is my intent to fund a desk or two and provide some desktop computers (intel iMacs) in order to foster some idea of Microsupport for potential startup companies. It’s not about funding their pizza or foozball lifestyles because people who want to get things done will find a way – this is operational expenditure. The hard part for this sector is the capital expenditure. By providing up to date hardware and taking advantage of the bountiful free time that ‘young people’ have, I think there could be an excellent environment created in the co-working space to foster new and cool innovations coming out of Belfast. David Rice wrote that the co-working initiative is designed to espouse this single concept:

It’s my aim that one of the rooms in the upstairs be allocated to ‘incubation’ for a few potential movers and shakers out there who need that extra bit of support to get started. I don’t care whether they want to become movie makers, software engineers, web developers or digital artists – as long as they don’t just sit around surfing the web, it’s got to be better than nothing. I’ve not really talked about this with David, Andy or anyone else central to CoworkingBelfast so they may throw their hands up and tell me to piss off – but this is the concept. Most of the individuals involved in CoWorking Belfast are young men who probably would have loved to have a co-working space available to them especially with some up to date hardware starting up.

What would Co-Working Belfast get out of it? Another raison d’etre. Karma. Kudos. Reputation. And the feeling of doing the right thing. Maybe if they’re a success they’ll help fund the next iteration of CoWorking Belfast or whatever the new fad of the day is.

There are other similar methods of support out there which have a similar model but are not the same and therefore I think this brings a certain uniqueness. For example, Google’s Summer of Code provides a $5000 stipend for student developers for summer (around 3 months) of work on open source projects. Google funds around 400 students each summer this way (putting the bill at around $2 million) but then they are Google and have infinite money. There are also business incubation services in Northern Ireland available through InvestNI but the pitch is for the slightly later stage when the individuals know what they’re doing and need the incubation from hatchling to maturity.

To extend the metaphor, I’m talking about supporting the egg itself – until the egg cracks. It’s never been easier to start up a business and become the next Twitter, Youtube, Big Word Project or 37Signals and it is these kinds of business that we should be fostering. I think that the people involved in starting the co-working space in Belfast are best qualified to determine who uses the ‘hatchery’.

The co-working space itself won’t make Belfast like Silicon Valley by it’s presence, but by it’s vision.

At the start of the week, I authorised a bank transfer to send our sponsorship money down to the OpenCoffeeClub BBQ account and today we received notification that it had barfed. I’ve not had to send money to a company in another country before but I assumed as the banking systems are much the same (and likely owned by the same company anyway) that it would be simple.

Apparently having the sort code and account number and transferring funds is not as straightforward as you’d expect and the systems the banks use don’t have the verification checking to let you know that the payment can’t be accepted. Wouldn’t it make more sense to do that verification check at data entry time? And more to the point – why the hell can’t I transfer money that way? The banks have unique numbers, the accounts have unique numbers within the banks – what’s the problem?

We’re a far cry from the digital future we dream of where commerce can flow unfettered. Even transferring money from my own bank account to another online is made more difficult if the second is in a different country. The quick solution, we’re told, is to post a cheque.

Yes, it has to be some sort of cruel joke.

Apple released beta5 of the iPhone SDK and quietly opened iPhone Developer registration to the public so that everyone can load their code onto their iPhones and give them a go. The updates SDK is winging it’s way to me at 1495K/sec right now which means I’ll be able to have a play with it at lunchtime when I’m away from the oppression at $BIG_COMPANY (where music players have now been banned because they’re ‘not professional’ – it’s fun working through a problem when there are people talking loudly in every direction – really aids the concentration.)

Anyway, the SDK release.

This is, to be honest, much sooner than I expected and I think there must be quite a few happy people around who are loading apps onto their phones and enjoying the novelty. I’ve been fighting for some time at lunch just to try Interface Builder but something has always come up for the last 7 days. It’s frustrating and when I mention the frustration, the helpful response is ‘Well, if it mattered to you, you’d find time.” Brilliant.

I don’t know what sample code will work on the iPhone with the latest beta and I don’t know whether or not it’s safe to load my iPhone with the beta firmware and still want to use it as a phone. And there’s no way to check because Apple still have an NDA on all discussion on the technical aspects of the SDK and firmware.

As this is very much still a learning experience for me, it’s slow and boring. I’ve kinda decided to strike out and work on something else in order to maybe build some momentum. I would like a cashflow-type application for the iPhone.

As you can see, it’s a work in progress.

I’ve been very harsh about $BIG_COMPANY in the past but this is one thing they get right. Emergencies are all about response time and everything else happens when there’s time to do it. This means that if the business starts to lose production/manufacturing time then it’s all hands on deck. Conversely if it’s not going to have a direct effect on production/manufacturing (like getting a password reset) then it’ll happen at some point that’s otherwise hard to predict.

So while I agree that urgency is a demotivator – mostly because it’s always someone else’s urgency and they’re in your face about it – I don’t think I can agree either way.

Emergencies aside, the concept that urgency is poisonous only covers one half of the exchange. What you perceive as non-urgent might be an urgency for another person, a source of frustration and pain for their day, the start of a bad day which eventually will lead to a dinner eaten in silence. Been there, done that.

Try and make a positive difference to other people’s days. I take this theory seriously even when just driving to work: there’s no harm in slowing and letting people out in front of you or being a caring and courteous driver so you’re not causing other people stress first thing in the morning. I don’t speed, I overtake only when I need to and I’m pretty good at letting people out. As the day wears on, however, you can see the effect of a few hours of frustration. I can’t wait to get onto the main road and on the way home. I frown at people who drive carelessly and there’s a greatly reduced chance that I’ll wave you on. I just want to get home. And for the most part it’s because my priorities for the day have already been relegated to ‘non-urgent’ by someone else.

I used to get endlessly frustrated when commissioning a new building and finding that the builders were late, the sparks and plumbers late, the plasterers were slow and the painters delayed…which delayed the furniture and meant that the Technology installation would also be delayed. It caused issues with other projects but mostly the frustration was that the deadline for finishing hadn’t moved. All of these other people treated their work as non-urgent and it always seemed to be my technology team that had to recoup this difference. And every time we delivered, nomatter the personal costs.

I see this in software development as well. The software engineers are delayed because they don’t have the hardware or compilers. This delays the testing and QA. But the release date never slips. You just end up having inadequate QA and testing. And you thought there was a mystery about why most software sucks?

In my own company I understand the urgencies of the customer. Which is why we bought extra equipment for customers who needed a loaner machine due to a pending deadline. But getting access to it required staying calm, dispelling of hyperbole and as little self-entitlement and whining as possible.

Take ownership of urgency. Especially the urgency of others.

This is the #1 demotivator for me when it comes to software development. It’s an unreasonable fear and like all unreasonable fears it has to be overcome. Being afraid to do something because someone else will do it is simply stupid as is giving up when a big competitor comes on the scene. If they see it as a viable market then it’s actually an exceedingly viable market for the small business. You’ll have to fight against their ability to leverage market pressure and the two biggest issues there are going to be:

  • They can offer for free what you’re selling
  • The end user likely already has a login to their authentication system

Yes, it’s hard to fight against that kind of pressure but who told you that being an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) was going to be easy?

There are a lot of big company projects out there that start as skunkworks where someone has an idea and a project manager gives them enough rope to run for a while as long as they don’t step out of the yard. Google somewhat circumvents this with the 80:20 work week – 20% of the time you’re permitted to work on projects that interest you. It’s a sneaky way to use/abuse geeks who have a persistent work ethic (the things they love working on, that others would see as ‘work’, they see as enjoyment!). This kind of behaviour is why Google, though massive, still retains some agility and is able to throw out new and exciting stuff on a relatively regular interval. Compare this to Yahoo or Microsoft who haven’t given us anything interesting in years.

Just because Google has completely ripped off the look and feel of your app doesn’t mean you should stop. And that also goes for Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Facebook, Yahoo or any of the other 900lb gorillas in the market. You’ve got a good product I hope, you have some first mover advantage (in that people have already been paying you money) and you’ve already been thinking of what to do next with your application (which means when some copycat clones you, you can wait, see the effect on sales and then release your planned upgrade).

That said: if you think you could lose 80% of your customer base to this new free service run by one of the big nasty companies out there and this would cause you to lose a significant percentage of income and endanger your company, then you need to start diversifying.

Nothing is harder on your laurels than sitting on them.

The Royal Mint has revealed the new designs for our nations coinage.

As you can see in the image to the right, the Shield of the Royal Arms has been given a contemporary treatment and its whole has been cleverly split among all six denominations from the 1p to the 50p, with the £1 coin displaying the heraldic element in its entirety. This is the first time that a single design has been used across a range of United Kingdom coins.

I’d have thought this was a perfect opportunity to do away with the 1p and 2p coins. And then pass a law stating that all pricing has to be in multiples of 5 pence. And anyone who still kept on with pricing things like 11.99 and 1.98 would therefore be subverting the coin of the Realm and put in the Tower.

That would sort the men from the boys.
