30 Days To Fix Stuff

Doing some work today to relaunch Digital Circle for 2016.

Things kinda fell by the wayside when we discovered that NI Screen was going to withhold half of the cash that Digital Circle applied for (and attempt to deliver that part of the project themselves – and then blame us when they didn’t manage it right). It made it very difficult (and very demotivating) for me as it cut off my main income in one fell swoop and I had to run out and get a job. But such is the danger of being involved in consultant and delivery-based projects that you have to bid for.

So, a calendar year later and it’s time for a relaunch. We have a new steering group and the majority of the stalwarts from the old group have retired so I’m excited about doing new things. I want to have an event every quarter so that I have something to build up to. Nope, I don’t have a budget for it but then half the time in DC I didn’t have budget and we muddled through anyway. I do, however, have a day job.

I need some help in updating the web site, fixing some issues and pulling together a business model. I was happier in my DC work than in any other job so I need, for my own sake, to get back to it. The last year has been challenging both personally and professionally so a clean slate is absolutely required.

I know I’m probably the only person who reads this now, especially as the domain changed. But it’s me. And it’s for me.

The Big Boat!

I’ve started saving for the big boat. Depending on how I do over the next six months, it’ll see how big the boat gets. boat

Depending on how I do over the next six months, it’ll see how big the boat gets. I’m aiming for a 40 ft sailboat because I need separate cabins for my daughter and son when I force them to come and live with me at the weekends.

So if anyone wants to donate a few grand to my boat fund so I have somewhere to live this year, it would be awesome. ???

My target is about £40,000. I have about £5,000 so far. I’ll need a bit extra if I’m going to hire a skipper to help me sail it back from wherever it’s moored plus fuel and supplies so my target is a bit higher than that.

And if you don’t want to donate, please think of any mostly legal services I can perform on evenings and weekends. I’m not entirely averse to the slightly immoral 😛 😛 😛 or even the plainly distasteful. I’ve worked in bars on the mornings after the Friday and Saturday nights (Thanks Dad!), I’ve scraped cow crap and tonnes of chicken litter and I’ve worked for a bank (lowest of the low).

Happy to bring anyone who’s willing on board to help me ship it back (think of it as a holiday) and make a real trip out of it.

All I can promise is that when we arrive in Belfast, we’ll have a party ??? and ideally we’ll take the bugger out sailing when the weather improves!

P.S. this entire post is actually about being happy that I’ve managed to get about £5K into the fund so be happy for me!

P.P.S. Also willing to ‘entertain’ rich widows. Seriously. 😛

“13th of July, 4:50 pm. I’m sorry. I know that means little at this point, but I am. I tried, I think you would all agree that I tried. To be true, to be strong, to be kind, to love, to be right. But I wasn’t. And I know you knew this. In each of your ways. And I am sorry. All is lost here, except for soul and body, that is, what’s left of them, and a half day’s ration. It’s inexcusable really, I know that now. How it could have taken this long to admit that I’m not sure, but it did. I fought till the end. I’m not sure what that is worth, but know that I did. I have always hoped for more for you all. I will miss you. I’m sorry.”

Beautifully shot, mostly accurate, completely chilling.

plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

It’s worth saying that 2015 has been, on the whole, a pretty challenging year. Things happened beyond my control that I was forced to react to and, in every case, I like to think that I did my best, with the information I had, and the outcomes I could foresee. Did I do everything right in hindsight? No. Would it have been better if I had chosen differently? Maybe. Is it worth worrying about? Absolutely not.

But what did I achieve in 2015?

  • I went sailing.
  • Got a new job.
  • Lost 40lbs.
  • Got a qualification in solar power.
  • Got debt free.

I am looking forward to 2016 – indeed, I’m looking forward to the remainder of this year – because I’ve taken steps forward which I know I will cherish. But take it as read that when I say “2016”, I really mean “from this moment on”. For the two or three people who read this, this might even echo with some of you.

I want to do things in 2016.

I will be taking a CompCrew course somewhere warm over Easter. I know I will do this. If you want to come along and learn something, by all means. Usually the courses are up to six people so every friend is one less stranger and spending a week learning how to be useful on a yacht is no real hardship. It’s only about £650 or so for a week so why wouldn’t you.

I sold my dinghy earlier this year and I will be buying something bigger. While I have my eye on a Dufour 36 Classic and I’ll be working hard to scrap together the deposit for it one the next six months, even a cabin cruiser would be an improvement. Again – if you fancy going out on the water, ping me. I’ll be looking for excuses.

I want to try video podcasting. I kinda need to learn a bit before I embarrassingly put my face to a video screen but I enjoyed the bit of tech podcasting I did a couple of years ago (until it descended into a rant about Macs versus PCs or Android versus IOS – neither argument I give a shit about).

I want to visit a new country. I’ve been to France, Spain, Portugal, Sardinia, Italy, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Bulgaria, Gibraltar. I’ve not been to Switzerland, Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Poland or Greece or any of Africa. Some of those are on the list.

And I want to start a new business. I have some ideas.
