This was taken at 11:45 am UK time. That would be 06:45 in New York and 03:45 in California. Knowing that other people are playing your game means you’re more likely to play it. Would it be useful to include stats like this in every multiplayer game?

I do think it would be useful. Dota2 (currently in Beta) have a very extensive front page filled with basic stats like this as well as more focused information.
One thing i would like to see from Steam is an API for getting better stats or even real time data from running games. Think – a Dashboard view in an app that can be used has a customizable hud.
