I didn't want a free upgrade, I wanted to be able to pay the "subsidised" price of the 3GS, clear any remaining shortfall in the 3G subsidy and sign on for at least another 18 months.

Instead, I've flogged my 3G and bought the P&G 3GS which has ended up costing me less than I would had I just upgraded. O2 got none of my money and, next year, when the iPhone Super Ninja Deluxe Edition comes out I'll either be upgrading or, if O2 have lost exclusivity by then, moving to another carrier.

My #o2fail was about their inability to realise that they would be able to tie a large number of customers in for life if, every year, they allowed a reasonable upgrade path for iPhone users. They also keep whining on about "iPhone customers are no different from anyone else" yet they know how fanatical Apple zealots are but, more importantly, they have special tariffs, support lines etc just for the iPhone.

The whole "pay extra to use your unlimited data" is another issue I can see them getting into hot water with.

Thanks for commenting, Jess, the whole #o2fail thing has really annoyed me. Mac users have always been loud when it comes to demanding more than others (and few have more experience than I in this respect). iPhone users are more of the same it seems.

I never upgraded to the 3G. So, being eligible for an upgrade with O2 since May, I was advised to wait until the official announcement of the 3Gs by a kind o2 rep. She also warned of the upgrade situation. So I traded in my 8gb gen1 phone and walked out with a 16gb 3Gs. And paid nothing. Had enough credit for some new headphones, too.

No other phone manufacturer or mobile provider that I know of gave the offer that Apple/o2 did with the 3G. So when it's back to reality, people think they deserve special treatment and Apple is in cahouts with providers to insure contracts are longer than the time between new hardware models? It's sucky, but thems the breaks.

Now.. To solve the tethering conundrum...
