Gargle aspirin dissolved in water, and spit out if too sore to swallow.

I gargled some brandy once, and that helped too. Or I think it did.

Swallowing is simply too painful. I've tried the sprays and strepsils but nothing seems to be working. I'm off to the doctor later though to demand he amputate my throat.

Try ice-cream, it might numb your throat a little and also get something close to food into your system. Also, you can get pain-reducing sprays in the chemist. They make me feel sick, but as you say, everyone is different.

I suffer from sore throats, so can sympathise. I've also suffered through horrible illnesses like this, and worse, whilst living alone. That's the worst of all - there's no-one to even listen to you complain, or bring you soup, or put their head around the door to see if you are alive.

So.. um.. count your blessings, and eat ice-cream.
